Chugga Chugga Choo Choo To Boston & back again

We decided to pick up & leave for Boston. We got ourselves some train tickets, packed up & headed out. It was a 6 day vacation for me & a working vacation for Rob. At first I hemmed & hawed about how much planning needed to be involved before we could just pick up & leave. In the end, I threw planning to the wind & went for it.

Meredith was so excited to be going on a "chugger". She learned all about them from Disney's Chugginton. We woke up nice & early (read: 4am) to make our 6:20am train. We were all exhausted. EXHAUSTED! But that meant naps on the train....... yay!! I did not fare so well on the train. The rocking was enough to almost send me over the seasickness edge. UGH!

When we got to Boston I noticed a few things...... 1st..... it's much different than I remembered. The last time I was there was a good many years ago and I was there to pub crawl. I wasn't there for sights. 2nd.... al the older men reminded me a Ben Franklin. 3rd...... there are way more smokers there than there are here. Ok... that might not be a true statement. I just seemed to notice more people smoking there. 4th and most importantly.... Everyone seemed to pull in the "welcome" mat at 4pm. I couldn't understand that. A city with so many sights and so much to do and most things were closed at 4pm. So between 4pm & bedtime my kids were like caged animals stuck in a room to small for a family of 4.

Before we left I couldn't decide if I wanted to take the double stroller or the single. I should've brought the single, but I brought the double. Never again! I am completely out of my element with the double stroller. At least with the single stroller, I know it will always be used by 1 of them. When Meredith decides she wants to walk, sean goes into it. When Meredith decides she wants to get back in, I put Sean back in the carrier & wear him. It works for us. Plus the single is much easier to fold & carry. I would've been able to do so much more while Rob was working if I had the single & could've just jumped on the train. Oh well.... Live & learn right?

We did see a lot. And we celebrated Rob's birthday. My loving husband's birthday was May 1st. It was nice to carry on our tradition of going away for one our birthdays. We decided a long time ago, quite by accident, that vacations was a better way to spend our money. So we stopped buying each other gifts that would either get put away, get lost, have to be dusted, etc and just put the money toward going away somewhere.

And it wouldn't be in good Scott fashion if said birthday wasn't filled with lots of excitement. We went for dinner across from the hotel at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in the Old City Hall building. When we walked out of the hotel building, we heard lots of fire truck sirens. Low & behold they turned right down our street and stopped at the building next door. 3 of them! We thought "Wow! That must be some fire. The Ladder Co stabilized the truck & put the ladder up. Neither of us had ever seen that in action before, except on TV. Then we heard more sirens. And more trucks showed up. And a rescue truck showed up. All told there were 9 trucks on scene. There was a woman standing next to me & she remarked that she didn't know if she should go into Ruth's Chris. It might not be safe. I told her that that building was probably the safest place to be. It had, after all, stood the test of time. No?

Meredith was motioning for the firemen to "come on & go!" and when he stopped to talk to her, she got shy. Yes.... my shy gal was yelling at the fireman to goto work. I asked him what was going on & whether it was safe for us to be there & then in Old City Hall. He said "absolutely. It's a smoke condition." All that for a smoke condition? Yeesh!

Without much more fanfare we ate and headed back to the room where Rob had champagne, wine, chocolate covered strawberries & a Boston creme poe waiting for him. To bad we were all so stuffed from dinner. So we put it in the fridge & ate it on the way back home on the train. :)

Of course no trip is complete without one of our kids scaring the hell out of us. During our last night there Sean, who hates to roll onto his belly & NEVER does, rolled right off the bed at 3:45am and grazed his face on the corner of the nightstand. He did managed to land on a pillow so at least it wasn't to bad.

Poor guy got his first shiner & it wasn't even from Meredith. But you have never seen 2 parents so upset in all your life. And because we were so upset, Meredith woke & she got upset. Within 5 minutes both kids were fast asleep & fine. Rob & I, on the other hand, were completely wired. Isn't that always the way? Sean's face is fine and he wasn't in any pain and it didn't swell. It's actually almost gone by now. He heals pretty quickly. Thank goodness.

All told, we had an awesome trip. It was nice to be away for 6 days and it was even better to come home. It was nice to be in my own house with walls to separate us from the kids when they're sleeping. It was nice to know Sean had 4 "walls" to keep him in. Meredith was happy to be in her own bed and the dogs were happy we were home. We made some great memories. The kids had a great time. Rob & I had a lot of fun and we got to goto a restaurant that my grandparents went to 40 years ago and recommended to us, Durgin Park.

Here is a sampling of the pictures we took.
