Your unsure smile

I saw you. I watched you while you were watching us on the subway. I'm their mom. I notice when anyone looks at them.

I watched you as you smiled an unsure smile. I know you were watching him. I know you were looking at him and wondering if this was real. I know that look. I had that look. I assure you he is never left out or singled out. He is very much a part of us.

I watched you as you stood up from your comfy seat on the subway when you didn't have to and inch ever slowly closer to us. I watched as you watched them play together.

I saw your unsure smile again. I don't know your circumstance or how you came to be there or why, but we welcome new friends. You should've said hi. Told us your story.

I saw that what you saw made you happy. Maybe it made you happy to see him and us happy. That would make me happy.
