We went to BJ's today and it was the new one in Canarsie. We felt we'd give it a whirl to see if we liked better than the one we've been going to. It's more spacious and open, but not worth the trouble it was to get there.
We browsed, got the things we needed & set out for the check out stand. Our cashier seemed very interested in complaining about how long she'd been at the register with her co-workers and telling people she was "leavin' at 1:15".
Our cashier looked at Sean and asked how old her was.
Her: OOOOooooohhhh How old is he?
Me: 5 months old.
Her: Wow! My daughter is 5 months old too. What day was he born?
Me: July 8th.
Her: My daughter too! Is he sitting up?
Me: No.
Her: I have no idea what to get her for xmas. She's already sitting up & already on her hands and knees. Is he doing that?
Me: No.
Her: She's standing on her own too. She's gettin' so big. Ok. Have a good Christmas.
Me: Thank you. You too.
And..... cue the waterworks. It took everything in my being to not burst out in hysterics right there and the whole way back to the car. It hasn't gotten any easier for me to hear what other kids Sean's age or younger who are typically developing, are doing. And yes I know her kid is either super baby or she's exaggerating, but it doesn't change how it makes me feel. I feel like a failure because it doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing for him, how hard we work or how often we do the exercises. He's likely always going to be behind.

well, I'm here to tell you that her baby is more than likely NOT standing alone. You're smarter than that. and sean, well he's perfect.
ReplyDeleteWhat an idiot. There's just no excuse for some people.
ReplyDeleteSorry you had that happen. I get "A new one!" a lot. I just let everyone think that. Seriously. Why not? Hey, by the way, Calvin's not sitting up yet, let alone barely holding his arms up. Does that help you feel better? I am now giggling. Seriously, why would we want our kids to develop so quick we don't even notice it and they are off. That is a lot of work too. You are doing a great job and so is he.
ReplyDeleteThank you :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I hear ya! I now just preface that he had a rough start to life and is behind. I don't want to answer all the questions and feel everything that goes with it. I also say that we are just happy he is here with us and we don't care how behind he is...which is true!
ReplyDeleteYou are a great mom! That person just seemed uneducated and stupid...
Oh Jen, that does suck. Some people just really don't think before they speak!! You're doing a wonderful job and Sean is a perfect little kiddo (and such a cutie :))
