Laughter Amongst The Chaos

That's what I've got. Lots and lots of laughter. With so many things seemingly wrong in my life I have to laugh. If I don't laugh I might have to stop & cry.

You would think that with a life as exciting as mine, I wouldn't be bored or stuck in a rut, but that's exactly where I seem to be. If you look at my calendar, it reads like a playbook from the NFL. X's and arrows everywhere for who has to be where at what time. But quite frankly.... I'm bored with going to drs & having therapies and doing nothing fun.

However.... even through the chaos that is my calendar I got the opportunity to laugh my tushy off yesterday. I went to the dr and had some allergy testing done. The back story is that my sinuses are the worst and the eustachian tubes in my ears are even worse than that. I have had tubes in my ears for 3 years and in that 3 years never got an ear infection. The right tube finally came out and almost instantly I got an ear infection. I have had ear infections my whole life and it did some damage to my ears and my hearing.

In an attempt to find out why, my ENT suggested allergy testing. No biggie right? I know my allergies. Cats, bees, etc.

I got my skin test and was told to sit there for 15 minutes and "DON'T SCRATCH". Thanks buddy. The control spot started to itch like crazy after a few minutes, but so far I wasn't allergic to anything. Woohoo! He tested me for things like cats, dogs, dust mites, trees, molds, etc. Not bees and not foods. I felt like I was winning this game.

15 minutes went by and he said it looked "unremarkable" and told me I should come back to have the next round of testing done. He would put allergens under the skin to see how I reacted and would also test for foods. Joy of joys. We discussed some other things like the bee allergy, M's seeming allergy to yogurt, etc.

And then as I was getting my prescription for an epi pen (for the bee allergy) it started. My left wrist started with a raging itch. Holy Moses that was some itch. A little hive started to grow and pretty soon I had a huge welt on my left forearm. I showed it to Dr. V and he said "that's a nice one!" Oy.

He looked back to see which one was causing such a reaction and....... It's friggin guinea pig! I laughed so hard that I fell over. I had tears running down my face from laughing so hard. I had no idea this was such a big problem that it actually made the list of things tested for in the 1st round. I mean.... sure it's furry and people can be allergic to it, but it's not like 1 in 3 households have a guinea pig. I'm still laughing at that. So it looks like there will be no guinea pigs in our future. Did you hear that "aw schucks" coming from my hut yet? Didn't think so. Yuck with the guinea pigs.

In other news.....

Sean went for his well visit to the pedi on Thursday. He has not gained any weight in the last month and in fact lost an oz. I don't know what that's all about, but the dr didn't seem worried. I'm a little worried. Especially since the cardiologist said that after his surgery, Sean would gain like a mad man. So he weighs in at 11lbs 4oz and that's in the 10th percentile for a typical child and 50th percentile for a child with down syndrome. Meredith, just for comparison, is like 3rd percentile for weight. If, of course, she's even on the chart anymore.

He has grown in height just fine. He's stretching in at 25 1/4 inches long. My tall baby. He took his vaccines like a champ. He had to get the prevnar, Hib & synagis. I don't normally like for them to get more than 2 vax at a time, but I felt that each of these were very important in their own right since it's cold & flu season and those protect against meningitis, pneumonias & RSV.

There are so many winter crafts to do. We have made reindeer out of foot & hand prints. And we've made snowmen out of marshmallows. Ours did not come out looking even halfway the way they looked in the magazine, but Meredith certainly enjoyed testing all the food to make sure it wasn't poison. We made pumpkin chocolate chip cookies that came out more like scones because we added baking powder. Of course Sean woke up 1/2 through the making of the cookies and so we gave him a seat to watch the festivities. After I set him up, Meredith made sure to saddle up next to him while we waited for the cookies to bake & I cleaned up. And we made a plastic sandwich baggie wreath. In that wreath we hung up an ornament a dear friend of ours sent to us.

I also went out with one of oldest friends. It was so nice to go out for a little while & reclaim some of my life back. We've said we're going to try to do it at least 1x a month, but you know with kids..... But it was nice to see her.

In being bored and having a full calendar, I've decided to follow in the footsteps on my friend & reclaim some of my life. Last night Rob & I went out for dessert and hot chocolate. Then we saw some friends for a few minutes. And the week after Christmas I have unscheduled us. I told all of the therapists I didn't want them to come that week and I am not scheduling any appointments with drs unless it's an emergency. We'll see how it works out. I will only schedule fun things like lunch with friends, museum dates with the kids and things like that. Wish me luck.
